Overview
Families and small groups can share a six-bed room at Kamenoi Hotel Beppu, about five minutes on foot from Beppu Station. A dedicated baby room and several four-person layouts broaden the choice, while the public hot-spring bath brings an onsen soak to a central Beppu stay.
The name has deep local roots. Kumahachi Aburaya, a central figure in Beppu's tourism history, founded the original Kamenoi Hotel in 1911. Today's high-rise hotel is larger and livelier than a traditional inn, combining on-site dining and family facilities with straightforward rail and bus connections.
Rooms
Rooms range from compact singles and standard twins to triples, four-bed layouts, a six-bed family room, and the dedicated baby room. Standard singles measure 13 square meters, while standard twins provide 21 square meters. The family categories are considerably larger.
The 62-square-meter family room has six proper single beds and accommodates up to six guests. The baby room sleeps up to four and includes a crib and microwave. Bath and childcare items include a diaper bin, a child's toilet seat, and a small selection of toys and picture books. Bed arrangements differ among the four-person categories, so check whether your room has four fixed beds or a combination of regular, extra, and sofa beds.
Facilities
The third-floor bath area uses Beppu's simple hot-spring water and includes a large indoor bath, an open-air bath, a cold bath, and a sauna. Bathing hours pause from late morning until late afternoon, so an immediate soak after an early arrival may not be possible.
A children's corner and nostalgic festival area share the same floor. Table tennis, arcade games, manga loans, massage chairs, and coin laundry give families and groups several ways to spend time after sightseeing. Expect a lively atmosphere rather than the hush of a small ryokan.
Dining
Beppu Bold Kitchen serves a buffet with jigokumushi steamed dishes and a live kitchen. The mix of Japanese, Western, and Chinese food is helpful when a group doesn't want to commit to the same set menu.
Aburaya Kumahachi serves local dishes such as ryukyu and dango-jiru alongside kaiseki meals. A separate evening restaurant specializes in dandan noodles. Menus and seasonal promotions change, so check what's included in your accommodation plan before counting on a particular dinner.
Location and transport
The hotel is south of Beppu Station in the Beppu Station Area. The five-minute walk keeps JR limited express trains, local buses, and the tourist information counter close, while central restaurants and older public baths can be explored without traveling to another district.
Kannawa and the main Hells area aren't within walking distance. Buses from Beppu Station take about 20 minutes to reach that higher hot-spring district, and the Hells are divided between two clusters. A taxi or car can save time when the schedule is tight.
Airport access
The scheduled Airliner bus runs from Oita Airport to Beppu Station in around 50 minutes under typical conditions. The hotel is then about five minutes away on foot.
This is a public airport bus, not a hotel transfer. Check the current stop and timetable before traveling, particularly for an early flight or a tight connection.
Why stay here
Sharing one room is much easier when three to six people travel together, without giving up proximity to Beppu's main transport hub. Parents with babies have a purpose-built room, drivers get extensive free parking, and evenings can continue with a soak, buffet, games, or manga after younger travelers tire of sightseeing.
The tradeoff is clear. This is a large, active hotel in central Beppu, not a secluded onsen inn among Kannawa's steam-filled lanes. It suits a mixed itinerary better than a stay devoted entirely to quiet bathing or a traditional ryokan atmosphere.
Good to know
Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and checkout is by 11:00 AM. All rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking booth on the second floor. Current bath hours are 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM to midnight.
The free car park holds about 300 vehicles. Its multistory section has stairs but no elevator, so unload passengers and luggage at the entrance before parking. Oversized vehicles use a limited number of flat spaces on a first-come basis.
