Overview
A former chamber-of-commerce building connects OMO5 Otaru by Hoshino Resorts with the city's trading-port history. The hotel is in Ironai, near Otaru Canal and about nine minutes on foot from Otaru Station. You can explore old commercial streets during the day, then return to a lounge in the building's former assembly hall.
The South Building dates from 1933 and retains elements of its original interior, while the North Building provides a more contemporary setting. The focus here is the canal neighborhood and the character of the hotel itself, with a walk to the trains rather than a station-front location.
Rooms
The 92 rooms are divided between the two buildings, with layouts for one to three guests. Twin rooms provide a straightforward option, while Superior and Deluxe categories have more spacious, retro-inspired interiors. High windows add to the South Building's historic character.
If the old building is the reason you're booking, check which wing your room occupies. Not every room is in the heritage building. Compare the bed arrangement and occupancy as well, particularly when traveling as a group of three. All rooms are nonsmoking.
Facilities
OMO Base is a lounge for planning time in town, with a neighborhood map and staff recommendations. Guests can also borrow music boxes for their rooms, a small detail that connects the stay with one of Otaru's familiar crafts.
Laundry facilities and a shared microwave help with everyday needs during a longer Hokkaido trip. Paid hotel and partner parking is available on a first-come basis without reservations, so drivers should review the parking instructions before arrival.
Dining
OMO Cafe & Bar occupies the former assembly hall on the South Building's third floor. Breakfast is served as a buffet from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., with last entry at 9. One signature dish layers seafood and sushi rice in a glass like a parfait, while freshly fried churros provide a sweet or savory alternative.
The cafe reopens in the afternoon, and evening service runs from 8 to 11 p.m. Oil lamps illuminate the room, with an antique disc music box playing at scheduled times. Admission to the lounge is free for guests, while food and drinks cost extra. Even if you eat elsewhere, you can return for a drink and the music-box performance.
Location and transport
Faster trains between Sapporo Station and Otaru take around 35 minutes. From Otaru Station, the hotel is a separate nine-minute walk, so allow for that final stretch when planning a departure with luggage.
The canal and former financial district are the main areas to explore from the hotel. Sakaimachi Street adds glassware shops, music boxes, and confectionery stores to a day on foot. The hotel also runs a free guided morning walk along the street, with advance reservations required.
Airport access
Some JR Airport trains run directly from New Chitose Airport to Otaru, with the fastest journeys taking about 73 minutes. Check the destination before boarding: services that end at Sapporo require a change for Otaru. The walk from the station follows the train journey.
Hokkaido Chuo Bus also operates an airport service to the shared HOTEL TORIFITO OTARU CANAL/OMO5 OTARU stop. The trip takes around 85 minutes, depending on traffic, but departures are limited. Compare the timetable with your flight before choosing the bus over the train.
Why stay here
An overnight stay leaves time to see the canal after dark and walk through the shopping streets in the morning before continuing by rail. The historic dining room and music-box evenings give the hours spent back at the hotel their own character, beyond the convenience of the central location.
Otaru Canal's stone warehouses and gas lamps recall the city's years as a busy port. Nearby commercial streets preserve more of that history, while Sakaimachi's shops offer glassware, sweets, and music boxes to browse between meals.
Good to know
Check-in starts at 3 p.m., and checkout is at 11 a.m. The hotel is scheduled to close for maintenance from 1 p.m. on November 16 to noon on November 18, 2026. Luggage storage and public spaces will also be unavailable during the closure.
