Yamamotoya

Overview

A 350-year-old ryokan beside the willow-lined Otani River, Yamamotoya is about a minute from both Ichino-yu and Yanagi-yu. The walk from Kinosaki Onsen Station takes roughly seven minutes, and a free station shuttle operates until 18:00.

This is the heart of Kinosaki's public-bath circuit. The inn has separate hot-spring baths for men and women, and guests receive complimentary entry to the town baths, so it's easy to alternate between the two experiences during an evening.

Rooms

The 15 rooms range from traditional tatami-and-futon accommodation to Japanese-Western layouts. Some Japanese rooms overlook the river and willow trees, while two special rooms face an enclosed rock garden.

Standard river-facing rooms measure 13 square metres and sleep up to four guests. A 30.5-square-metre Japanese-Western room has four single beds and two futons, while a 25-square-metre tatami room accommodates up to seven. Each special room also has a private half-open-air bath.

Facilities

The men's and women's hot-spring baths include an indoor pool and, in the men's bath, an open-air barrel tub. Tattooed guests may use the inn's baths.

Senyu, the reservable private open-air bath, accommodates up to two guests for a 40-minute session. Advance booking is required, and only five sessions are available daily, so arrange it before arrival if private bathing matters to you.

Dining

Japanese full-course dinners feature Tajima beef, local seafood, and winter Matsuba crab. Tempura and similar dishes are prepared to follow the pace of the meal rather than far in advance. Guests may dine in the dining room or arrange in-room service.

Yamamotoya also operates its own microbrewery. Its four all-malt beers include pilsner, white beer, stout, and a red ale created to accompany crab dishes, adding a distinctive local pairing to dinner.

Location and transport

The inn is in central Kinosaki Onsen, about 600 metres from the JR station. The outdoor walk follows the town's main street; guests arriving by train can instead take the free shuttle until 18:00. Luggage may be left before check-in begins at 15:00.

The nearest public baths are almost outside the door. Ichino-yu and Yanagi-yu are about a minute away, while Goshono-yu and Jizo-yu take roughly three minutes. Reaching the ropeway and baths at the western end of town requires a slightly longer walk.

Airport access

Scheduled buses connect Kounotori Tajima Airport with Kinosaki Onsen Station around flights to and from Osaka Itami. From the station, continue on foot or use the ryokan shuttle while it is operating.

There is no airport shuttle from the inn. If your itinerary depends on the regional airport, check the flight, public bus, and ryokan shuttle schedules together.

Why stay here

Bathhouse visits begin almost at the entrance, while the private bath, river-facing rooms, course dinners, and house-brewed beer provide reasons to linger indoors. The station walk is longer than for inns near the rail entrance, but the central setting is better suited to evenings built around the public baths.

Willow-lined streets extend in both directions along the river. Guests can wander toward the ropeway and Onsenji Temple, stop for food between baths, or return to the inn without retracing the full length of town.

Good to know

Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and checkout is by 10:00 AM. Dinner plans require an early-evening arrival, so confirm the cutoff attached to your booking. All guest rooms are non-smoking, with a small smoking area on the third floor.

The private bath requires advance reservations and carries an additional charge. Fees, session times, public-bath pass terms, and shuttle availability can change, so confirm the current arrangements before arrival.
