Overview
The preserved former Ban family residence now serves as the lounge at CANDEO HOTELS Kyoto Karasuma Rokkaku. It contains a library with complimentary coffee and tea, plus tatami seating beside the courtyard. About three minutes away on foot, Karasuma Oike Station connects Kyoto's two subway lines.
That combination gives the stay two distinct sides. Days can begin with direct subway routes toward Kyoto Station, Nijo Castle, or Higashiyama, while evenings can end in the townhouse lounge or the hotel's public baths. Shinkansen platforms and airport trains still require a short subway ride or taxi.
Rooms
The six room categories range from 20-square-meter twins to 34-square-meter Private Spa Twins. Standard Twin and King rooms have showers, the Executive Twin adds a conventional bath, and both Private Spa categories have their own open-air bath.
All rooms are non-smoking and use Simmons beds. Several categories also have raised sofa seating, giving you a welcome place to sit or unpack after a day out. The main choice is simple: reserve a Private Spa room for bathing in private, or use the communal Skyspa and choose from the standard and Executive layouts.
Facilities
The guest-only Skyspa has indoor and open-air baths for all guests. The men's side also has a dry sauna and cold bath, while the women's side has a mist sauna. The baths remain open from 3:00 PM until 11:00 AM the following day, although the saunas close between 2:00 AM and 6:00 AM. Bring towels from your room.
The townhouse lounge is the other reason to spend time at the hotel. Its library is open around the clock with complimentary coffee and tea. Facing the courtyard, the lounge bar has tatami seating and serves paid drinks in the afternoon and evening.
Dining
Breakfast is a seasonal Kyoto-style bento of small dishes, served in the townhouse lounge from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Seating is limited, so guests select a time at check-in. You can also take the meal back to your room.
Breakfast comes only with an eligible meal plan and can't be purchased on the day. Later, the lounge bar serves drinks from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM, but there isn't a full restaurant for lunch or dinner.
Location and transport
The hotel is near the northern side of Kyoto Shijo-Karasuma, about three minutes from Karasuma Oike Station. The Karasuma Line runs directly south to Shijo and Kyoto Station, while the Tozai Line crosses the city toward Nijojo-mae, Sanjo Keihan Station, and Higashiyama.
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is close to the station, and Nijo Castle is one stop west. Karasuma Oike is therefore a convenient middle ground for sightseeing across central and eastern Kyoto without depending on buses for every trip.
Airport access
Airport journeys run through Kyoto Station. The Haruka limited express connects Kansai International Airport directly with Kyoto Station; from there, continue three stops on the Karasuma Line to Karasuma Oike or take a taxi.
This isn't a hotel-door airport transfer. Staying beside Kyoto Station is simpler for a very early departure or a luggage-heavy overnight connection, while Karasuma Oike gives you a more central position once sightseeing begins.
Why stay here
The short walk to Kyoto's main subway interchange keeps cross-city sightseeing manageable. After returning, the Skyspa and townhouse lounge provide worthwhile places to unwind. You get central subway connections, plus places to relax that feel specific to Kyoto.
Nearby, the Kyoto International Manga Museum occupies a former school building. The Tozai Line adds a one-stop ride to Nijo Castle and direct travel toward Higashiyama, while the Karasuma Line heads south to Shijo and Kyoto Station.
Good to know
Arrive by public transport if you can. There is no on-site parking or bicycle parking, and the one-way school-zone street makes stopping at the entrance awkward.
Guests with tattoos may use the Skyspa at this branch. Swimwear isn't permitted, children who still wear diapers can't enter the baths, and towels must be brought from your room.
