Overview
Richmond Hotel Matsumoto is about four minutes on foot from Matsumoto Station's Castle Exit, the side most visitors use for downtown streets and Matsumoto Castle. The location keeps train and bus arrivals simple while still leading naturally into the city's castle-town center.
That balance is the hotel's appeal. It suits travelers who want limited express trains, buses, restaurants, and central sightseeing close at hand, rather than a stay farther out toward the mountains.
Rooms
Room types include single and double rooms, twins, tatami twins, and deluxe doubles. Standard single and double rooms measure 17.6 square meters, while twin rooms and deluxe doubles offer 27.1 square meters.
The tatami twin is the roomiest and most flexible option, with 32.0 square meters, space for additional futons, and separate bath, toilet, and washbasin areas. It is worth comparing if you are sharing, traveling with family, or simply want more space than a standard business-hotel room.
Facilities
The hotel provides the core conveniences needed for a city stay: Wi-Fi, in-room air purifiers with humidifying functions, an amenity bar, coin laundry, vending machines, microwave and ice-machine access, plus a public computer and printer.
A paid multistory car park next to the hotel is available on a first-come basis. Partner parking is used when that car park is full or when a vehicle does not meet the size requirements, so drivers should see parking as convenient but not guaranteed.
Dining
Breakfast is served as a Japanese and Western buffet at Gusto Matsumoto Chuo on the first floor. Service currently begins at 6:00, which is helpful for early trains, buses, or sightseeing starts.
The surrounding Chuo area also has plenty of casual dining within an easy walk, making dinner simple after a day around the castle, city streets, or mountain routes.
Location and transport
The signed walking route from Matsumoto Station starts from the Castle Exit, also known as the East Exit, and continues through restaurant-lined streets toward the hotel. From this side of the station, Matsumoto Castle, Nawate Street, Yohashira Shrine, and the downtown core are all manageable short outings.
For onward travel, the nearby station and bus terminal are the main advantage. Matsumoto is served by the Limited Express Azusa and Shinano, local JR lines, the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line, highway buses, city buses, airport-shuttle access, and seasonal mountain routes.
Airport access
Access to Shinshu Matsumoto Airport is by shuttle or bus through the station and bus-terminal area, not by a hotel-door shuttle. Allow time for the short walk between the hotel and the transport hub before planning around a flight connection.
Why stay here
Stay here if you want to be close to Matsumoto Station without giving up easy access to the castle-town side of the city. The location works well for late arrivals, early departures, restaurant evenings, and itineraries that combine downtown sightseeing with rail or bus travel.
It is also a practical choice for regional planning. Matsumoto is a common base for Kamikochi and other mountain routes, and staying near the station area makes timetable-based departures easier to manage while keeping the central streets within reach.
Good to know
Matsumoto is not a Shinkansen station. Most rail travelers arrive by limited express, and mountain trips often involve seasonal buses or a train-and-bus transfer, so check onward schedules before making a tight plan.
