Overview
Choose the Matsumoto Station Area if convenience matters more than scenery. Matsumoto Station is the main rail entry point to the city, and the surrounding blocks bring together the connections most travelers need: JR limited express and local trains, the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line, city buses, highway buses, airport-shuttle links, taxis, hotels, shopping streets, restaurants, and routes into central Matsumoto.
The area is not the most atmospheric part of the city, but that is exactly why it works well for many trips. It is an easy place to arrive, check in, leave luggage, find food, and line up the next leg of travel without crossing town first.
Station area fit
The Castle Exit, also called the East Exit, is the side most visitors will use for downtown Matsumoto. From here, you can reach station-area hotels, city-loop bus stops, Matsumoto Bus Terminal, shopping streets, restaurants, and walking routes toward Matsumoto Castle with little confusion.
This area is a strong fit for early departures, late arrivals, luggage-heavy itineraries, business stays, Kamikochi transfers, and first-time visitors who want a straightforward place to stay before exploring the castle town. It is also helpful when your plans involve several forms of transport in one trip, such as arriving by limited express train, taking a local line toward Shin-Shimashima, and continuing by bus into the mountains.
Access
Matsumoto Station is served by JR limited express and local trains, along with the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line to Shin-Shimashima for onward buses to Kamikochi. Matsumoto Bus Terminal is a short walk from the station and handles many highway, mountain, and airport-related bus routes, making the station area the simplest place to organize both city and regional travel.
Matsumoto Castle is about 15 minutes away on foot, or around 10 minutes by Town Sneaker bus. Walking is straightforward for many visitors, while the bus is a better choice if you are short on time, carrying bags, or want to avoid extra walking before sightseeing.
Trips to Kamikochi need more planning than a simple city transfer. Depending on the season and timetable, travelers generally use train-and-bus connections via Shin-Shimashima or limited direct buses from Matsumoto Bus Terminal. Staying near the station or bus terminal can make those early starts and transfers easier to manage.
Good to know
Choosing the right exit can save time. The Castle Exit is best for downtown Matsumoto, buses, the Toyoko Inn Matsumoto-eki Higashi-guchi side, and routes toward Matsumoto Castle.
The Alps Exit is better for some west-side station access and specific bus or pickup points. If you are meeting a driver, using a hotel shuttle, or following instructions for a particular bus, check the exit name before leaving the concourse, as the two sides of the station serve different parts of the area.
