Overview
A private basement entrance connects Sapporo Grand Hotel directly to the city's main underground walkway. Sapporo Station is about ten minutes away through the city center, while Odori Station is roughly five minutes in the opposite direction.
Its scale and history set it apart from a simple station-side stay. Open since 1934, it now spans three buildings with 494 rooms. Dining, events, and lounge service make the experience very different from a limited-service city stay.
Rooms
Rooms range from 21-square-meter Standard twins to spacious family, connecting, and suite layouts. Many twin and double categories measure between 26 and 44 square meters, while selected rooms accommodate three or four guests.
Each building has a different character. The Main Building's Grand Classic rooms were renovated in 2025, combining updated bathrooms and furnishings with references to the hotel's history. The East Building covers Standard, Comfort, and Executive categories, while Grand in Grand reaches the largest suite level.
Guests in eligible Grand Classic, Executive, or Grand in Grand rooms can use the fourth-floor Executive Lounge. Service changes throughout the day, progressing from morning refreshments to tea and sweets, followed by evening drinks and light food.
Facilities
A Memorial Library and local art gallery reflect the hotel's long history in Sapporo. The larger complex also supports meetings and events, while the Executive Lounge has a small conference room for eligible guests.
Parking is available for 180 standard-size cars, although vehicle dimensions determine where guests can park. For most train and subway arrivals, the direct underground entrance is likely to matter more, especially when snow or rain makes street-level walking uncomfortable.
Dining
Breakfast choices include a broad Japanese and Western buffet at Northern Terrace Diner and a Japanese set meal overlooking the garden at Garden Dining Waraku. Both feature Hokkaido ingredients, and the hotel's apple pie is a long-running house specialty.
Beyond breakfast, the hotel covers lunch, dinner, coffee, and late drinks. Separate Chinese and Japanese restaurants provide more formal meals, while the bakery and lounges handle lighter stops.
Location and transport
The hotel is between the JR rail hub and Odori rather than directly beside either station. Head toward Sapporo Station for New Chitose Airport trains and JR trips around Hokkaido. Odori brings all three municipal subway lines together and places the park close by.
The private hotel entrance is beside Exit 8 of the Sapporo Ekimae-dori underground walkway. This covered route runs between the Sapporo and Odori subway areas, allowing guests to complete much of the final approach indoors. Winter is where the difference is clearest.
Airport access
JR Airport trains connect New Chitose Airport with Sapporo in as little as 33 minutes, with many Rapid services taking about 37 minutes. From the station, the hotel is another ten minutes on foot, and the underground walkway provides the most sheltered approach.
For travelers with luggage, the direct airport bus removes that final walk by stopping at Sapporo Grand Hotel. The hotel advises allowing about 80 minutes in summer and 100 minutes in winter, so rail is usually faster while the bus offers a simpler door-to-door journey.
Why stay here
The underground entrance is especially valuable in snow, rain, or cold weather. Although this isn't a station-front stay, the position between Sapporo and Odori balances airport and JR connections with convenient access to the park and the wider subway network.
Sapporo Clock Tower, the Former Hokkaido Government Building, and Odori Park are all within the surrounding central sightseeing area. An arrival or departure day can therefore include a short walk through several of the city's best-known landmarks.
Good to know
Exit 8 of the underground walkway is not the same as Exit 8 inside Sapporo Station. Follow signs for the Sapporo Ekimae-dori underground walkway, then use the hotel's dedicated basement entrance beside its Exit 8.
Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and checkout is by 11:00 AM. The hotel connects directly to the walkway, not to the JR or subway ticket gates.
10-minute walk
