Overview
Umekoji Potel KYOTO opens onto the edge of Umekoji Park, beside Kyoto Aquarium and within walking distance of Kyoto Railway Museum. This location in Kyoto-Umekoji offers an open, family-friendly setting one JR stop west of Kyoto's main rail hub. Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station is about five minutes away on foot.
Much of the appeal is indoors. Guest lounges across four floors offer books, board games, vinyl records, and original maps introducing less familiar parts of Kyoto. They give families and couples comfortable places to spend time between outings, especially when the weather turns.
Rooms
The 144 rooms differ in layout as well as size. Garden and Park Side rooms face Umekoji Park and have terraces, while Wood Box and Wood Flat rooms combine shoes-off layouts with timber finishes inspired by Japanese homes. Four smaller aeru concept rooms draw on silk, foil, wood, and bamboo crafts. The Universal Room has a step-free route to the bathroom and a lower bed.
Sizes range from about 17 to 36.3 square meters, and several twin rooms can accommodate a third guest. Check the bathing arrangement carefully before booking. Park Side and Wood rooms have showers but no bathtubs, while aeru and Potel rooms have neither a private bath nor a shower, so guests in those categories use the communal bath.
Facilities
There's plenty to do without leaving the hotel. One lounge has a wall of books selected by a Kyoto bookseller; others feature board games, records with a dedicated sound system, and locally made neighborhood maps. Complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks, and coffee are available from self-service stations during set hours.
The communal bath is modeled on an old neighborhood sento and is included in the room rate. It isn't an onsen or a conventional large hotel bath, and a sauna is also available. From the rooftop terrace, views extend across Umekoji Park toward Kyoto Tower, Toji Temple, and the surrounding mountains.
Downstairs, Umekoji Fermentation Factory sells sake and fermented foods. It also has a bar counter and a koji-making room. Three self-service laundry machines are available, and detergent isn't required.
Dining
Breakfast is unusually flexible. During service, guests can return to the buffet and take food to designated shared spaces around the hotel. Choices range from Kyoto-grown rice and grilled fish to curries and bread.
The restaurant also serves lunch on weekends and public holidays. At dinner, it offers set menus and a la carte dishes. Cafe Polum faces the park and serves drinks, seasonal tarts, and hot sandwiches.
Location and transport
The JR Sagano Line connects Umekoji-Kyotonishi Station with Kyoto Station in about three minutes without a change of train. The hotel is about a five-minute walk from the local station, while walking from Kyoto Station's Central Exit takes roughly 20 minutes. City and Keihan buses from Kyoto Station stop at Nanajo Omiya/Kyoto Aquarium-mae, followed by another five-minute walk.
Trains on the same line continue toward Nijo and Saga-Arashiyama, simplifying westbound sightseeing. Kyoto Aquarium, Umekoji Park, and Kyoto Railway Museum are all within walking distance. Days focused on downtown Kyoto or the eastern temple districts require more time on local transport.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, the JR Haruka runs directly to Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes. Change there to a local Sagano Line train for the one-stop ride to Umekoji-Kyotonishi, followed by a walk of about five minutes.
From Osaka Itami Airport, an airport limousine bus reaches Kyoto Station in about 50 to 55 minutes, traffic permitting. A local train or taxi completes the journey. Both airport routes therefore require a final transfer at Kyoto Station.
Why stay here
Kyoto Aquarium and Kyoto Railway Museum are close enough to reach on foot, while the lounges, rooftop terrace, cafe, and sento make time at the hotel part of the stay. It also suits itineraries that include Nijo or Saga-Arashiyama; both are on the same JR line.
A hotel at Kyoto Station requires less luggage handling before an early Shinkansen or airport departure, while a downtown base is more convenient for late evenings around Shijo or Gion. Here, the trade-off brings a quieter park setting, several distinctive guest lounges, and major attractions just outside.
Good to know
Google Maps may suggest a route through Umekoji Park. In bad weather or with large bags, use the alternative street route recommended by the hotel. The 18 on-site coin-parking spaces are shared with visitors to nearby facilities, cannot be reserved, and may fill. The hotel has no affiliated parking elsewhere.
The sento deliberately retains fixed showers and old-style taps that require bathers to mix hot and cold water themselves. The hotel warns that this setup can be awkward with small children. Take a towel with you because none are stocked inside the bath.
