Overview
Odawara Station is the key rail junction between the Tokyo side of Kanagawa, the Tokaido Shinkansen, and the route into Hakone. With five operators sharing the complex, it works equally well as a destination, an overnight stop, or a transfer point between a high-speed train and a slower mountain journey.
The station anchors the Odawara Station Area. Odawara Castle and the city center are on the east side, while the Shinkansen gate is on the west side.
Lines and connections
JR Central operates the Tokaido Shinkansen platforms. JR East runs Tokaido Line services toward Yokohama, Shinagawa, and Tokyo, as well as Shonan-Shinjuku trains that connect with the Shinjuku side of the metropolitan area.
Odakyu links Odawara with Shinjuku, including selected Romancecar services. Hakone Tozan trains continue to Hakone-Yumoto, where travelers transfer to the mountain railway and other Hakone transport. The Daiyuzan Line begins on the east side and runs toward Minamiashigara.
Station area
The east side is the main side for central Odawara. Minaka Odawara, shopping streets, bus stops, taxis, and the walking route to Odawara Castle all start here. The castle is about ten minutes away on foot.
The west side is quieter, but it matters for bullet-train passengers. Use this side for the Shinkansen gate and taxi rank, especially when a fast departure is more important than immediate access to the castle-town center.
What's nearby
Odawara Castle is the most prominent nearby sight, with a reconstructed keep, gates, historical exhibits, and a park known for seasonal flowers. East-side restaurants and shops also make it easy to try local seafood, kamaboko, and Odawara oden before or after a train.
Good to know
Pay attention to both the operator and the exit. Build in a little time to cross between the east-side city center and the west-side Shinkansen gate, and check whether your Hakone connection is by train or bus before leaving the concourse.
