Overview
Toyama Station is Toyama's main transport hub and the anchor of the Toyama Station Area. It is the key arrival point for the Hokuriku Shinkansen and a practical base for local rail, airport buses, city trams, and nearby station-area hotels.
Lines and connections
JR West serves Toyama with the Hokuriku Shinkansen and Takayama Line services, while the Ainokaze Toyama Railway handles local east-west travel across Toyama Prefecture. The Shinkansen provides direct high-speed access to Tokyo and westbound Hokuriku routes, including journeys via Tsuruga for connections toward Kansai and Nagoya.
Toyama Chihou Railway trams run through the station area, linking the north and south sides with downtown stops and the Iwasehama waterfront route. Nearby Dentetsu-Toyama Station forms the private-rail side of the transport cluster, with trains toward destinations such as Tateyama, Unazuki-Onsen, and Shin-Kurobe. For visitors, Toyama Station is more than a Shinkansen stop: it is where rail, tram, bus, and local sightseeing routes come together.
Airport access
Toyama Chihou Railway buses connect Toyama Airport with Toyama Station in about 25 minutes. This makes the station area convenient for travelers flying into Toyama before continuing by Shinkansen, local rail, tram, or checking in at a nearby hotel.
Station area
The station complex includes Shinkansen and Ainokaze gates, ticket offices, a bus terminal, through-passages, and shopping such as Toyamarche. Staying nearby is especially useful for trips built around easy transfers, early trains, airport-bus timing, or short stays in Toyama rather than a quieter neighborhood base.
Good to know
Toyama Station, the tram stop, bus terminal, and Dentetsu-Toyama Station are close together, but they are not all managed by the same operator. Check the operator and gate before transferring, especially when moving between the Shinkansen, Ainokaze or Takayama Line services, trams, airport buses, and Chihou Railway trains.
