Overview
Yonezawa Station is the main rail stop for travelers visiting Yonezawa for Uesugi history, wagyu dining, and mountain hot springs. The Yamagata Shinkansen connects the city directly with Tokyo in a little over two hours, and buses or taxis from the station continue to the major sights.
The station anchors the Yonezawa Station Area and works well for rail access and nearby hotels. The historic center is not right outside the gates, however, so plan on a short bus or taxi ride after arriving.
Lines and connections
Yamagata Shinkansen trains run south toward Fukushima and Tokyo and north toward Yamagata and Shinjo. The Ou Line follows the same broad north-south corridor for regional travel.
The Yonesaka Line runs west from Yonezawa toward Imaizumi. Service beyond Imaizumi toward Sakamachi remains disrupted after rain damage in 2022, with substitute buses operating on the suspended section, so check current JR East information before planning a through journey.
Station area
The compact station building brings together the Shinkansen and local-line areas. Travelers can buy tickets, store luggage, get travel assistance, or pick up a rental car before continuing into the city. Elevators and accessible facilities are also shown on the station map.
The surrounding blocks have hotels, taxis, buses, and road access, making the area convenient for a first or final night in Yonezawa. Toyoko Inn Yonezawa Ekimae is about three minutes from the West Exit.
What's nearby
Uesugi Shrine and Matsugasaki Park are about 10 to 15 minutes away by bus or car. The former castle grounds, treasure hall, and surrounding streets form the main historical area, so leave time for travel beyond the immediate station neighborhood.
Onogawa Onsen takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes by bus or car. Shirabu Onsen and Tengendai Kogen are farther into the mountains and require a longer bus or road journey.
Good to know
Check Yonesaka Line operating information if you plan to travel west of Imaizumi, since the route is not running as a normal through rail service to Sakamachi. In winter, heavy snow can slow buses, taxis, and walking routes between the station and nearby hotels, so allow extra time.
