Overview
Just south of Shijo Street, Sora Niwa Terrace Kyoto places the shops and restaurants of Kyoto-Kawaramachi within walking distance, with Gion across the Kamo River. The rooftop terrace looks toward the Higashiyama hills. You can soak your feet in hot-spring water, then return after dinner for a drink overlooking the city.
Rooms
Most rooms have one double bed and measure around 18 to 20 square meters. The Moderate Double has a shower booth, while the Superior Double adds a bathtub and a slightly wider bed. That difference matters if you'd rather bathe in your room than use the shared hot springs.
The only separate-bed option is the Universal Twin, a 37.8-square-meter accessible room with two single beds, wide sliding doors, and step-free slopes. Reserve it specifically if separate beds are essential. All room types accommodate up to two guests.
Facilities
The two shared hot-spring baths alternate between men and women each day. Both have a 1.2-meter-deep section where guests can stand in the water, and the east-facing bath overlooks Higashiyama. The baths are reserved for hotel guests, as are the rooftop terrace, footbath, and evening bar.
The ninth-floor lounge serves coffee, tea, and ice cream, which guests can take onto the terrace. Coin laundry and a microwave are available in the basement, while reception can hold luggage before check-in or after check-out.
Dining
Breakfast is served in a bento box. Guests can choose a Japanese breakfast with seasonal vegetables and dashi-seasoned dishes or a Western version with bread, ham, and sausages. Both require booking at least three days ahead.
Breakfast is collected on the ninth floor, and the Japanese bento can be eaten in your room or on the terrace. The first-floor Japanese restaurant also accepts advance dinner reservations.
Location and transport
Kyoto Kawaramachi Station is about a minute's walk from Exit 2 and has Hankyu trains toward Osaka-Umeda. Across the river, Gion-Shijo Station is around four minutes away via Exit 3, with Keihan services along Kyoto's eastern side.
From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma subway line to Shijo, walk through to Hankyu's Karasuma Station, and ride one stop to Kyoto Kawaramachi. A taxi avoids that transfer when you're arriving with luggage.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, take the Haruka limited express to Kyoto Station, then continue by subway and Hankyu or by taxi. From Itami Airport, the airport limousine bus to Kyoto Station connects with the same onward route.
Why stay here
After a day in downtown Kyoto, you can return to a hot-spring bath without traveling to an outlying resort. Nishiki Market's food shops are nearby, while Gion's streets and the riverside paths offer pleasant walks after dinner.
Good to know
The deep shared baths aren't available to preschool children or anyone under 140 centimeters tall. Guests with tattoos should consult the hotel before booking if using the baths is a priority.
