What this station is useful for

Overview

Shijo Kawaramachi is one of Kyoto's main shopping and evening districts, and the Hankyu terminal lies directly below it. From here, Pontocho and Kiyamachi are close to the east, while the covered shopping streets and Nishiki Market extend west.

Kyoto Kawaramachi isn't Kyoto's long-distance hub. Kyoto Station handles JR, Shinkansen, and airport connections. Kyoto Kawaramachi is the downtown terminal for Hankyu trains from Osaka.

Lines and connections

Kyoto Kawaramachi is HK86, the eastern terminal of the Hankyu Kyoto Line. All departures head west through Karasuma and Katsura, with trains continuing toward Osaka-umeda; some through services run to Tengachaya on the Osaka Metro Sakaisuji Line.

Nearby Gion-Shijo Station belongs to Keihan, not Hankyu. It is across the Kamo River and serves routes along Kyoto's east side, including direct trains to Fushimi Inari. For Osaka-Umeda, Hankyu leaves from Kawaramachi; for Keihan destinations, cross Shijo Bridge to Gion-Shijo.

Station area

The station is underground, with entrances spread along Shijo. Exits 2 through 6 open around the Shijo Kawaramachi intersection, while the Kiyamachi South and Kiyamachi North entrances are closer to the restaurant and hotel streets beside the Takase River.

There is no large terminal building above ground. Check the exact exit before leaving the ticketed area, especially with luggage or a hotel address on Kiyamachi.

What's nearby

Pontocho begins near the eastern end of the station, and the Kamo River and Gion are reached by continuing across Shijo Bridge. Restaurants and bars make Pontocho and Kiyamachi more active after dark.

West of the station, Shinkyogoku and Teramachi lead through the covered shopping district. Nishiki Market starts just beyond Shinkyogoku, close enough to combine with a downtown shopping walk rather than a separate rail trip.

Good to know

Kyoto Kawaramachi and Gion-Shijo are separate underground stations. Moving between Hankyu and Keihan means walking at street level across Shijo Bridge, so allow time if you have luggage.

Kyoto Kawaramachi has no direct airport service. Airport journeys usually run through Kyoto Station, followed by a local connection downtown. Kyoto Station and Kyoto Kawaramachi aren't interchangeable: a booking or meeting point that says Kawaramachi refers to the downtown Hankyu terminal.
