Overview
THE GATE HOTEL Kyoto Takasegawa by HULIC is located on the Takasegawa side of central Kyoto, near Kyoto Kawaramachi Station and Gion-Shijo Station. It is a polished choice for travelers who want Kyoto-Kawaramachi, the riverside dining streets, and Gion close at hand.
The property has more character than a standard city hotel, partly because it incorporates the former Rissei Elementary School site. It is best suited to travelers who value downtown Kyoto and the east-side evening districts more than being beside Kyoto Station.
Rooms
Rooms are divided between the contemporary Main building and the renovated Schoolhouse building. The Main building holds most of the inventory, while the Schoolhouse side gives the hotel its more distinctive atmosphere.
Categories range from compact Study and Modest rooms to larger THE GATE, Suite, Grace, and Connect layouts. The choice comes down to whether you want the best value in a central location, more space, or the added character of the Schoolhouse setting.
Facilities
The guest-only Lounge & Patio is one of the hotel's standout features, with books curated by the Rissei Library and an outdoor space reserved for guests. A Premium Lounge and fitness area add room to unwind beyond your guest room, without making the hotel feel like a resort.
The hotel does not have its own parking, so it is a better fit for guests arriving by train, taxi, or local transport than for those traveling by car.
Dining
Anchor Kyoto, the main restaurant on the eighth floor, offers views toward Higashiyama. Breakfast is served there in a choice-based format, and the same floor also includes the Lobby Lounge & Bar.
The dining setup works well with the location: you can begin or end the day above the downtown streets, then walk straight into the surrounding evening district.
Location and transport
Kyoto Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line is about three minutes away on foot from the Kiyamachi North Exit. Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line is about five minutes away from Exit 4, giving guests convenient access to both Hankyu and Keihan lines.
This location is strongest for downtown Kyoto, the Gion-Pontocho side of the city, and itineraries using Hankyu or Keihan rail. Kyoto Station is in a different area, so long-distance rail arrivals usually involve a taxi, bus, or rail transfer.
Why stay here
Choose THE GATE HOTEL Kyoto Takasegawa by HULIC if you want a refined downtown Kyoto stay with a distinctive Schoolhouse element, comfortable lounges, Higashiyama-view dining, and easy access to Kawaramachi and Gion. It is especially appealing for evenings out, restaurant plans, and east-side Kyoto walks rather than station-front convenience.
Good to know
This is not a Kyoto Station hotel. It is better for downtown Kyoto and the Takasegawa-Kiyamachi area, while Kyoto Station is simpler for long-distance rail timing, luggage-heavy first nights, and some airport-bus connections.
