Overview
On the western side of central Kyoto's Shijo corridor, Travelodge Kyoto Shijo Karasuma is about 300 meters from Omiya Station and 220 meters from the Shijo-Horikawa bus stop. Nearby Shijo-Omiya Station adds a direct Randen tram route to Arashiyama.
Hankyu trains cover short trips east to downtown Kyoto and longer journeys toward Osaka, while buses serve several major sightseeing areas. Unlike a stay beside Kyoto Station, arriving by Shinkansen or from Kansai International Airport requires a final local transfer.
Rooms
The rooms are compact. Standard doubles measure 14 square meters, while standard twins and superior queens provide 18 and 19 square meters respectively.
The Friends and Family Triple sleeps three in 18 square meters, and the Quadruple sleeps four in 21 square meters. Both use a queen bed with separate single beds rather than sofa beds. A 17-square-meter accessible queen room is also available.
Facilities
Self-service laundry is particularly helpful during a longer city stay. The front desk operates around the clock with multilingual support, while a lobby microwave and drinking water help with simple meals between outings.
Dining
Breakfast is optional rather than included with every booking. A continental buffet is served in the lobby from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM, covering a quick meal before sightseeing or an early departure.
Local restaurants and izakaya line the western Shijo corridor, so dinner doesn't depend on returning to the hotel at a set time.
Location and transport
Omiya is station HK-84 on the Hankyu Kyoto Line. Trains run east to Kyoto Kawaramachi Station and west toward Osaka-Umeda, providing a private-rail route across downtown Kyoto and onward to Osaka.
Each option serves a different part of the trip. The Randen runs from Shijo-Omiya to Arashiyama in about 24 minutes, while buses from Shijo-Horikawa travel directly toward Gion and Kiyomizu-dera. Hankyu is simpler for Kawaramachi and Osaka.
Airport access
From Kansai International Airport, the Haruka limited express or an airport limousine bus reaches Kyoto Station first. From there, continue to the hotel by local rail or taxi; there is no hotel-door airport service.
That final connection is the main arrival tradeoff. If a simple airport or Shinkansen transfer matters more than the western Shijo location, staying beside Kyoto Station removes the extra local leg.
Why stay here
Nearby Randen and Hankyu services simplify day trips to Arashiyama and Osaka. Group rooms and self-service laundry add flexibility for friends, families, and longer visits.
The wider central Kyoto setting also brings Shijo's shopping and dining corridor and Nijo Castle into local plans. Randen's route through western Kyoto is the location's clearest advantage over many other central stays.
Good to know
The current official name is Travelodge Kyoto Shijo Karasuma, but some listings still use the former name Travelodge Kyoto Shijo Omiya. Despite the current name, Omiya is the nearest station; use Omiya and Shijo-Horikawa as the main arrival references.
The hotel is non-smoking, pets aren't allowed, and Kyoto's accommodation tax is charged separately.
