Overview
Rail and shopping come together in the same building. Matsuyama City Station occupies the ground floor of Iyotetsu Takashimaya, while Matsuchika Town leads underground toward Gintengai. Trams and buses gather around the forecourt. This is downtown Matsuyama's Iyotetsu hub, not the JR station.
Staying nearby keeps flight and ferry arrivals straightforward. Direct buses run from Matsuyama Airport and Matsuyama Tourist Port, while the tram reaches Okaido and Dogo Onsen without a taxi. Sightseeing can begin from the same place where you arrived.
What the area is known for
Shopping extends east from the station. Matsuchika Town connects with Gintengai, a covered arcade that continues toward Okaido through the heart of downtown. Meals, everyday shopping, and a sheltered walk after hotel check-in all fit along this route.
The atmosphere changes farther east. Blocks near the station are commercial and transport-focused, while Okaido has more evening dining and a closer approach to Matsuyama Castle. Dogo Onsen is the clear choice for hot-spring streets and bathhouses.
Main places
Iyotetsu Takashimaya is the area's largest shopping landmark, with the local railway platforms in the same complex. Matsuchika Town begins below the station side, and Gintengai continues above ground toward the center. Together, they turn shopping into part of the route rather than a separate outing.
Hotels cluster near the buses and trams. REF Matsuyama City Station by VESSEL HOTELS is about one minute from the station, a welcome advantage after arriving by airport or tourist-port bus.
Stations and access
Iyotetsu local trains leave Matsuyama City Station for Yokogawara, Takahama, and Gunchu Port. For most city sightseeing, the tram matters more: Okaido Station is about eight minutes away, and Dogo Onsen takes about 20 minutes.
The airport limousine bus reaches Matsuyama City Station in about 24 minutes, while the direct tourist-port bus takes about 26 minutes. Both stop on the city-station side, so nearby hotels don't require another transfer.
JR Matsuyama Station is separate. Use it for JR intercity trains; Matsuyama City Station handles Iyotetsu rail, trams, direct airport and port buses, and the downtown shopping side. City trams connect the two stations.
Where it fits in a trip
A first or last night here cuts out an extra transfer when the schedule revolves around a flight, ferry, or early Iyotetsu departure. The covered arcades and direct trams also make day-to-day sightseeing straightforward.
For Matsuyama Castle, arcade dining, and a livelier evening setting, Matsuyama Okaido puts you closer. Stay in Dogo Onsen when baths and onsen-town atmosphere are the reason for the trip, or near JR Matsuyama Station when an intercity train sets the schedule.
Good to know
The station forecourt is still being rebuilt as of July 2026. The new tram stop is already in use, and the bus stands have been consolidated in the east rotary. Full completion of the plaza is scheduled for September 30, 2026, so follow current signs and allow a little extra time around the work area.
