Overview
The airport connection defines Nagoya-Kanayama. At Kanayama Station, south of central Nagoya, JR's Tokaido and Chuo main lines meet the Meitetsu Nagoya Main Line and the Meijo and Meiko subway lines in one rail complex.
The surrounding streets form a compact business and transport district rather than a sightseeing quarter. Hotels, casual restaurants, shops, and event venues cluster near the exits, so the area works best for exploring other parts of Nagoya.
What the area is known for
Asunal Kanayama is the main gathering place on the north side. Its shops and restaurants face an open-air event plaza, and an adjoining bus terminal adds local connections. Nearby, the Kanayama Tourist Information Center provides English-language assistance, ticket sales, and baggage storage.
Hotels and performance venues gather around the south-side plaza. ANA Crowne Plaza Hotel Grand Court Nagoya is one minute from the south exit by a covered route, a welcome detail when you're carrying luggage or arriving in wet weather.
Stations and access
JR trains reach Nagoya Station in about five minutes. Meitetsu services run directly to Chubu Centrair International Airport, with the fastest taking about 25 minutes. The Meijo subway line serves Sakae and Nagoya Castle, while the Meiko line continues to Nagoya Port. Atsuta Jingu is also a short Meitetsu ride away.
JR, Meitetsu, and the subway use separate ticket gates within the station. Transfers are straightforward, but changing operators can take a few extra minutes when you have luggage.
Where it fits in a trip
Kanayama is particularly convenient on an arrival or departure day at Centrair. It also works well when a trip combines central Nagoya with Atsuta Jingu and the port area, especially if you'll use both local rail and subway services.
For itineraries centered on the Shinkansen, Nagoya Station is simpler. Sakae puts more nightlife and large-scale shopping on the doorstep. Kanayama keeps transfers easy and everyday services close to the station.
Good to know
Asunal Kanayama and the tourist information center are beside the north exit. The ANA Crowne Plaza and several event venues are on the south side, so checking your exit before leaving the paid area can prevent an unnecessary walk around the station.
Kanayama has no Shinkansen platforms. Change at Nagoya Station, and allow a little extra time to cross the JR concourses if you're carrying luggage.
