Overview
Abashiri Station is the main JR rail stop for Abashiri and the anchor of the Abashiri Station Area. Visitors commonly use it for station-area hotels, local buses, taxis, airport-bus connections, and onward travel across eastern Hokkaido.
Lines and connections
The station is served by the JR Sekihoku Main Line and JR Senmo Main Line. The Sekihoku route connects Abashiri with Kitami, Asahikawa, and Sapporo-side travel, while the Senmo route runs toward Shiretoko Shari and Kushiro, with stretches known for coastal and marshland scenery.
In drift ice season, the Ryuhyo Monogatari sightseeing train runs between Abashiri and Shiretoko Shari, making the rail journey itself part of the winter sightseeing plan.
Airport access
Memanbetsu Airport is the closest airport for Abashiri. Airport shuttle buses serve the Abashiri side, with the trip from the airport to Abashiri Bus Terminal listed at about 35 minutes. From there, travelers continue by local bus, taxi, or on foot, depending on their hotel location and luggage.
Station area
The area around the station is geared more toward convenient travel logistics than scenic immersion. Hotels, taxis, rental-car options, tourist information, and local bus services make it a straightforward place to stay before heading to the Aurora terminal, Museum Abashiri Prison, Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, or other sights beyond the station core.
Good to know
Abashiri Station works well for rail and bus connections, but many of the city's best-known attractions are not directly beside the platforms. Allow time for local buses, taxis, rental cars, or seasonal sightseeing routes when planning visits around the city.
