Overview
Abashiri is an eastern Hokkaido city on the Sea of Okhotsk, best known for winter drift ice, Okhotsk coastal scenery, local seafood, museums, and onward travel toward Shiretoko and Kushiro. Most visitors arrive through Abashiri Station or Memanbetsu Airport.
The city works well as both a destination and a transfer point. Travelers come for the Abashiri Drift Ice Sightseeing Icebreaker Aurora, Museum Abashiri Prison, the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Indigenous Peoples, nature cruises, and rail journeys along the Senmo Main Line.
What the city is known for
Abashiri's identity is closely tied to the Sea of Okhotsk. In winter, the drift ice and Aurora icebreaker are the main draw. In warmer months, the focus shifts to coastal views, cycling, cruises, and seafood-focused travel.
Museum Abashiri Prison is one of the city's signature sights. The official tourism site also highlights the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Indigenous Peoples, Cape Notoro, Lake Abashiri, Omagari Lakeside Park, and Roadside Station Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri.
Main areas
The Abashiri Station Area is the easiest place to stay when rail access, airport buses, local buses, taxis, and straightforward arrival logistics matter. The waterfront and Roadside Station Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri are better placed for the Aurora terminal and tourist information, while the museum and nature sights are farther from the station core.
Getting around and onward travel
Abashiri Station is served by the JR Sekihoku Main Line and JR Senmo Main Line. Rail options include limited express routes from Sapporo and Asahikawa, services toward Kushiro and Shiretoko Shari, and the seasonal Ryuhyo Monogatari sightseeing train during drift-ice season.
Memanbetsu Airport is the closest airport. Shuttle buses connect the airport with the Abashiri side, and local buses, tourist-facility buses, taxis, rental cars, and on-demand bus services help travelers cover the city after arrival.
Where to stay and where to go next
Stay near Abashiri Station if you want easy rail connections, airport-bus access, and a compact starting point for local buses or taxis. Choose the waterfront side when the Aurora terminal or Roadside Station Ryuhyo Kaido Abashiri matters more than being next to the JR station.
