Hakone-Yumoto Station

Hakone-Yumoto Station is Hakone's main rail gateway, linking Odakyu Romancecar arrivals with the Hakone Tozan Train to Gora, local buses, luggage services, and the shopping streets just outside the concourse.

What this station is useful for

Overview

Use Hakone-Yumoto Station as the main rail interchange for entering and leaving Hakone-Yumoto, especially if you are coming from the Tokyo side. Odakyu Romancecar services arrive here from Shinjuku, and many travelers then continue deeper into Hakone by mountain train, bus, taxi, hotel shuttle, or on foot into the town around the station.

Although the name often appears at the start of a Hakone itinerary, this is not necessarily the final stop. It is the point where rail passengers connect with Hakone's hot-spring town and wider mountain transport network, including routes toward Gora, Lake Ashi, Sengoku, Togendai, Hatajuku, and other parts of the area.

Lines and connections

Hakone-Yumoto has three main rail roles. Limited express Romancecar trains provide direct service between Shinjuku and Hakone-Yumoto. Local trains run back toward Odawara. Travelers heading into the mountains transfer here to the Hakone Tozan Train for Gora.

That makes the station a decision point as much as an arrival point. Before leaving the concourse, it is worth confirming whether your next leg is by train, bus, taxi, hotel shuttle, or a short walk into the nearby town center. This is especially important for visitors trying to combine several Hakone transport modes in one day.

Station area

The station is designed with travelers and luggage in mind. Facilities include coin lockers, temporary luggage storage, a baggage delivery counter for sending bags to accommodation, ticket counters, tourist information, and the Odakyu Sightseeing Service Center Hakone-Yumoto.

There are also food and souvenir options inside the station, including Hakone-no-ichi and Hakone Cafe. These are convenient for picking up something before a transfer, waiting for a train, or making a quick stop before heading into town.

The luggage services are most helpful on arrival and departure days. Storing or forwarding bags can make it much easier to explore the shopping streets, hot-spring town, or nearby sights before check-in, or to spend time in the area before returning to Tokyo or Odawara.

The station opens directly onto Hakone-Yumoto's compact town center. Hot-spring inns, hotels, souvenir shops, sweets shops, cafes, and restaurants are close by, so this area works well for travelers staying in the town or making a short stop before onward travel.

The surroundings are best understood as the most convenient part of Hakone for arrival logistics, onsen stays, and station-side shopping. The lake, ropeway, and higher mountain scenery are farther into Hakone, so reaching those areas requires another train, bus, or other onward connection after arriving here.

Good to know

Hakone-Yumoto Station is Hakone's main gateway, but it is not the endpoint for many sightseeing routes. If you are heading to Gora, Owakudani, Lake Ashi, Moto-Hakone, or Togendai, plan time for the next stage of the trip rather than treating Hakone-Yumoto as your final destination.

For day trips, the station works well as a clear place to start and finish. Check the next train or bus before leaving the station area, particularly if your route depends on multiple Hakone transport services.
