Overview
Choose Iwamotocho when your hotel, meeting point, or next destination fits the Toei Shinjuku Line better than JR Akihabara. The station is located on the southern side of Tokyo-Akihabara in central Tokyo and is close to Akihabara Station, but it serves a different travel pattern. It is the right call for Shinjuku Line trips, while Akihabara Station remains the place to use for JR services, the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and Tsukuba Express.
Lines and connections
Iwamotocho is S08 on the Toei Shinjuku Line. Toei lists Ogawamachi as the next station to the west and Bakuro-yokoyama as the next station to the east. Westbound trains connect with Jimbocho, Kudanshita, Ichigaya, and Shinjuku Station; eastbound trains continue toward Bakuro-yokoyama and the eastern side of the line.
This makes the stop especially relevant for routes along the Shinjuku Line corridor. If your destination is easier from one of Akihabara's rail lines, use Akihabara instead. If your directions point to the Shinjuku Line or to exits on the south side of the area, Iwamotocho may save an unnecessary detour through the larger Akihabara complex.
Station area
Iwamotocho is located at the southern edge of Akihabara, near hotel blocks around Kandasudacho, Manseibashi, and Soto-Kanda. Exit A3 is a good reference point for the south-side hotel area; one nearby Akihabara hotel lists that exit as a six-minute walk away.
Because some accommodations use Akihabara in their area description, it is worth checking the actual route they recommend. A hotel that is close to Iwamotocho may still be within walking range of Akihabara's shops and rail options, but the better first stop can depend on which line you are already using and how much luggage you have.
What's nearby
The main visitor draw is Akihabara's electronics, anime, manga, gaming, hobby, cafe, and shopping scene. Akihabara Station handles the JR Yamanote Line, JR Keihin-Tohoku Line, JR Chuo-Sobu Line, Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line, and Tsukuba Express, so the two nearby stops are not interchangeable. For those lines, head to Akihabara Station. For the Toei Shinjuku Line, Iwamotocho is the more direct choice.
Good to know
Iwamotocho and Akihabara are separate stations, close enough to work as a pair for some walks and hotel directions but not connected by a shared concourse. Confirm the line, exit, and meeting point before you set out, particularly if you are carrying luggage. When someone says Akihabara, they may mean the JR side, the Hibiya Line, the Tsukuba Express area, or the surrounding neighborhood; Iwamotocho is the south-side Shinjuku Line option.
