Karuizawa Station

Overview

Karuizawa Station is the main rail gateway to the resort town and the anchor of Karuizawa Station Area. It combines direct Hokuriku Shinkansen access with local Shinano Railway trains, buses, taxis, shopping, and resort hotels on both sides of the tracks.

It is easy to orient. The South Exit serves Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza and the Prince resort grounds, while the old-station and north sides are more useful for town buses, taxis, visitor information, and travel toward Old Karuizawa.

Lines and connections

JR East's Hokuriku Shinkansen is the main long-distance link, with direct trains toward Tokyo and services west toward Nagano, Kanazawa, and Tsuruga. The exact stopping pattern varies by train, so check the departure rather than assuming every service follows the same schedule.

Karuizawa is also the starting point of the Shinano Railway Line. Local trains provide the practical rail connection to Naka-Karuizawa, Komoro, and Ueda, with some journeys continuing toward Nagano through the wider regional network.

Buses expand the station's role beyond the railway. Local service runs to Old Karuizawa, a JR bus heads toward Yokokawa, and other routes continue toward Kusatsu and Manza. These are timetable-based connections, not turn-up-and-go city transit.

Station area

The South Exit reaches Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza in about three minutes. Hotels and resort facilities continue beyond the mall, so the station is convenient for that side of town without every hotel being a short platform-to-lobby walk.

The restored old-station entrance zone has cafes, local food shops, and a lounge near bus and taxi access. A tourist information center inside the station can help with current transport and sightseeing details.

What's nearby

The shopping plaza is the closest major visitor draw. Karuizawa Prince Hotel West lies farther across the resort side, about 13 minutes on foot, with a free pickup bus from the South Exit.

Old Karuizawa and Kumoba Pond are town outings rather than station-front sights. Public transport is simplest with luggage. Cycling or walking can work when the route and weather suit the plan.

Good to know

Karuizawa spreads beyond the station. Local buses and taxis fill important gaps, but taxi availability can tighten during peak periods and longer bus routes may be seasonal. Check the return as carefully as the outward trip.
