What this station is useful for

Overview

Randen trains end opposite Tenryu-ji, placing this compact station inside Arashiyama's main sightseeing district. Within Kyoto-Arashiyama, Togetsu-kyo Bridge and MUNI Kyoto are each about four minutes away, while the bamboo grove begins beyond the temple grounds.

This is the closest rail stop to the temple-front main street. JR and Hankyu passengers arrive at separate stations on different sides of the district, so the operator matters as much as the word Arashiyama.

Lines and connections

Randen Arashiyama is A13, the western terminus of the Arashiyama Line. Trams travel east through Katabiranotsuji toward Shijo-Omiya. At Katabiranotsuji, passengers can change to the Kitano Line for the temple districts of northwestern Kyoto.

Randen-Tenjingawa connects with Kyoto's Tozai subway line at Uzumasa Tenjingawa. From Kyoto Station, one rail route takes the Karasuma subway line to Karasuma Oike, the Tozai line to Uzumasa Tenjingawa, and Randen for the final leg. Taking JR to Saga-Arashiyama Station requires fewer changes, but leaves a longer walk to the bridge and temple area.

Station area

The staffed station has a step-free slope, toilets, coin lockers, and free Wi-Fi. The lockers are handy on a day trip if you don't want to carry luggage through the temple grounds or along the bamboo paths.

The station complex is a small attraction in its own right. The Kimono Forest installation fills the plaza with illuminated textile-pattern columns, while shops, food counters, bicycle rentals, and a public footbath provide places to pause before or after sightseeing.

What's nearby

Tenryu-ji's entrance is directly across the road. From there, a common walking route continues through the temple or surrounding lanes to the bamboo grove before returning toward the river and Togetsu-kyo Bridge.

MUNI Kyoto is beside the bridge, about four minutes from the station. Fukuda Art Museum and the monkey park entrance are also near the river, although reaching the latter requires crossing the bridge and following an uphill path.

Good to know

Three stations use Arashiyama in their names. This Randen terminus is in the sightseeing core, Saga-Arashiyama is the JR stop to the east, and Hankyu Arashiyama Station is south of the river. They aren't interchangeable.

Randen gives the closest arrival to Tenryu-ji and the bridge, particularly when approaching through western Kyoto's tram and subway network. JR is usually simpler from Kyoto Station, while Hankyu can suit journeys from Osaka or the downtown Kyoto side.
