Takayama Station

Overview

Takayama Station is where rail and bus journeys through the Hida region come together. The JR station anchors the Takayama Station Area, with Takayama Bus Center next door and the old town about a 12-minute walk away.

A stay near the station simplifies luggage-heavy arrivals, early Limited Express Hida departures, and trips built around reserved highway buses. Takayama's historic streets are close enough to reach on foot, but they aren't directly outside the platforms.

Lines and connections

Takayama Station is on the JR Takayama Main Line. Limited Express Hida trains provide the main rail connection toward Gifu and Nagoya, while northbound services continue toward Toyama.

There is no Shinkansen service here. Rail journeys from Tokyo or Osaka commonly involve taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya, then transferring to the Limited Express Hida for the final mountain section.

Next door, Takayama Bus Center fills important gaps in the rail network. Highway buses run toward Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, and Toyama, while other routes serve Matsumoto and the Okuhida area.

Station area

The station, bus center, tourist information office, taxi stands, and nearby hotels form a compact arrival zone. Baggage services at the tourist information office can help when hotel check-in doesn't line up with a day of sightseeing.

Mercure Hida Takayama is four minutes away on foot. Its short walk from both the rail station and bus center is convenient for early departures or late arrivals.

What's nearby

Sanmachi's traditional merchant streets are about 12 minutes from the station, and the Miyagawa Morning Market is about 15 minutes away. Takayama Jinya is also within the central walking area.

Hida Folk Village calls for a separate local outing rather than fitting into the same walk. The Sarubobo Bus runs there from Takayama Bus Center.

Takayama Station and Takayama Bus Center are beside each other, but their ticketing and reservation systems are separate. Check the operator before departure, particularly for highway buses that require advance booking or run only on selected dates.
