Overview
Oita is the prefectural capital and the main rail hub on the Beppu Bay side of central Kyushu. Oita Station anchors the city center, where shopping, hotels, art museums, and local restaurants make an easy first stop before trips elsewhere in the prefecture.
The city has a different character from nearby Beppu. The center is built around everyday urban life, art, food, and transport, while its best-known coastal attractions remain outside the walkable center. That split matters when planning a short visit.
What the city is known for
Art has a visible place here. The Oita Prefectural Art Museum, designed by Shigeru Ban, exhibits work connected with the prefecture, and the Oita Art Museum stands in a park south of the center. Funai Castle ruins add a smaller historic stop within walking distance of the station district.
Farther west along Beppu Bay, Umitamago aquarium and Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden face each other across the coastal road. The aquarium focuses on close encounters with marine life, while Takasakiyama is known for wild Japanese macaques that come down from the mountain. Both require a bus or car from downtown.
Food gives the city another reason to pause. Toriten, ryukyu-don, Bungo beef, and seafood appear across local restaurants, while shops near the concourse make regional sweets and prepared foods easy to pick up before a train.
Main areas
The Oita Station Area is the simplest place to stay. JR Oita City wraps the station with AMU Plaza shopping and dining, Bungo Niwasaki Market, a rooftop garden, and direct access to the city's main rail and bus connections.
North of the station, the central streets continue toward the art museum, Funai Castle ruins, shopping arcades, and the business district. The aquarium and monkey park form a separate coastal outing closer to the boundary with Beppu; they shouldn't be treated as part of a compact downtown walk.
Getting around and onward travel
Three JR routes meet at Oita Station. The Nippo Main Line runs north through Beppu toward Kokura and Hakata and south along eastern Kyushu. The Kyudai Main Line heads inland toward Yufuin and Hita, while the Hohi Main Line crosses toward Aso and Kumamoto.
Oita has no Shinkansen station. Rail travelers arriving from Honshu normally change at Kokura for a limited express to Oita. Oita Airport is also separate from the rail network; scheduled Airliner buses run to Oita Station in about an hour, depending on traffic and the service used.
City buses cover the coastal attractions and museums outside the immediate center. Check the return timetable before setting out, especially if a flight or limited express departure follows the visit.
Where to stay and where to go next
Stay around Oita Station when airport buses, rail departures, shopping, and a broad choice of city restaurants matter most. Beppu is a short rail trip north and is the better choice for a stay centered on hot-spring districts rather than the prefectural capital.
The city also works as a starting point for Yufuin, Usuki, Aso, and other trips across eastern and central Kyushu. Direct services vary by route and time of day, so build the itinerary around the current timetable rather than the map alone.

Oita can mean the city or the wider prefecture. Check the exact municipality when reading hotel and attraction listings. Within the city, the station district is walkable, but Umitamago and Takasakiyama require a bus, taxi, or car.
