Overview
Imperial Hotel, Kyoto is best suited to travelers who want to stay in Gion itself, rather than treat the district as a stop between train rides. It is located inside the grounds of Gion Kobu Kaburenjo near Hanamikoji Street, placing the hotel close to the lanes of Kyoto-Gion. The property incorporates Yasaka Kaikan, a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property, and keeps to an intimate 55-room scale: 47 rooms in the Main Building and 8 in the North Wing. That combination makes it a full-service luxury stay shaped by the neighborhood, with generous rooms and enough on-site comfort for unhurried evenings in Gion.
Rooms
Every guestroom is larger than 50 square meters, a notable amount of space for central Kyoto. In the Main Building, heritage rooms retain architectural elements from Yasaka Kaikan; in the North Wing, the newer rooms are designed to blend with the Gion streetscape. Materials such as Oya stone and Shiraishijima rust stone give the interiors a quiet local texture, without requiring guests to choose a traditional ryokan layout.
Categories range from premier rooms to junior suites and larger suites. Some add balconies or tatami areas, and the North Wing leans toward a contemporary Japanese look. The 128-square-meter Imperial Suite includes a large terrace and use of the preserved original gazebo. Other top-tier choices include the 101-to-104-square-meter Yasaka Suite and the 100-square-meter Heritage Junior Suite with Balcony.
Facilities
Staying guests use an exclusive lounge for check-in, refreshments and concierge support. Food and drink there shift throughout the day, from lighter morning offerings to sweets and evening beverages. A guest-only rooftop area extends the building's historic role as a rooftop social space and gives open-air views over Kyoto.
Wellness options include a pool, sauna and thermal baths, with fitness facilities and spa treatments also available. Complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi is provided in guestrooms and public areas. Chauffeur service can be arranged for transfers, day trips or sightseeing, while valet parking is available to hotel guests by advance reservation; only four spaces are listed.
Dining
Dining is a significant part of the stay for a 55-room hotel. REN is the fine French restaurant, YASAKA serves all-day dining, and OLD IMPERIAL BAR provides the classic bar setting. THE ROOFTOP is reserved for guests staying at the hotel, while THE PASTRY SHOP covers hotel-made pastries and Imperial Hotel classics.
In-room dining is available for breakfast, lighter meals and more formal orders. That flexibility matters in Gion: many guests will want to go out in the evening, but the hotel still works well for nights when a quieter meal indoors is the better choice.
Location and transport
Stay here for Gion first, not for immediate proximity to JR Kyoto Station. The hotel is within the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo grounds near Hanamikoji Street. For local rail travel, Gion-Shijo Station on the Keihan Main Line is about 8 minutes away on foot, while Hankyu Kyoto Line Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station is about a 10-minute walk.
JR Kyoto Station is about 3.5 km from the hotel and roughly 15 minutes by taxi. City Bus No. 206 also runs from Kyoto Station to the Gion stop, followed by a 5-minute walk. Taxi drivers should enter the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo grounds from Hanamikoji Street, pass through the main gate and continue to the main entrance on the left.
Airport access
Kansai International Airport (KIX) is about 100 km away by road, with a drive of around 90 minutes. By rail, the JR Limited Express Haruka runs from Kansai Airport Station to JR Kyoto Station in about 90 minutes. The Airport Limousine Bus from KIX to Kyoto Station takes about 90 minutes as well.
From Osaka International Airport, also known as Itami Airport, the road distance is about 50 km and the drive takes around 60 minutes. The Airport Limousine Bus from Itami Airport to Kyoto Station takes about 55 minutes. From Kyoto Station, continue to the hotel by taxi or City Bus No. 206.
Why stay here
Choose Imperial Hotel, Kyoto if you want the atmosphere of Gion to be part of the stay rather than a separate evening excursion. The setting connects the hotel to Yasaka Kaikan, Gion Kobu Kaburenjo and Hanamikoji Street, while the small room count helps it feel removed from a convention-hotel rhythm. It is strongest for travelers who value spacious guestrooms, in-house dining and wellness facilities within walking distance of Gion-Shijo.
Good to know
Travel times are rough guides and do not include transfer or waiting time. The location favors Gion evenings and Keihan or Hankyu rail plans; if you are arriving with heavy luggage through JR Kyoto Station, a taxi is likely to be easiest. The guest lounge and rooftop bar are reserved for staying guests. Valet parking requires an advance reservation, and non-staying visitors are directed to nearby public coin parking that is not affiliated with the hotel.
