Overview
Tree-lined Peace Boulevard forms a broad east-west corridor through central Hiroshima. Hiroshima-Peace Boulevard covers the hotel blocks of Nakamachi, Fukuromachi, and Otemachi. Peace Memorial Park lies to the west. The hotels remain close to downtown shopping and dining, with Fukuro-machi Station and Chuden-mae Station along the corridor.
The area feels less commercial than Hiroshima-Hatchobori and less focused on transport than Hiroshima-Kamiyacho. Its appeal lies in the middle ground: central sightseeing to the west, dining and shopping to the north, and hotels on both sides of the boulevard.
What the area is known for
Created during Hiroshima's postwar reconstruction and named in 1951, Peace Boulevard is a 100-meter-wide avenue lined with trees and green space. Memorials and surviving trees remain along parts of the route, which also marks the southern edge of Peace Memorial Park.
North of the boulevard, Fukuromachi becomes livelier. Cafes and wine bars mingle with small restaurants and shops along the way to Hondori and Namiki-dori. The mood changes after dark.
Main places
At the western end of this central area, Peace Memorial Park brings together the Atomic Bomb Dome, Peace Memorial Museum, Cenotaph, and other memorial sites. ANA Crowne Plaza Hiroshima faces the boulevard in Nakamachi, about five minutes from the park.
THE KNOT HIROSHIMA occupies the Otemachi side, with its reception and rooftop bar looking across central Hiroshima toward the park. Near Fukuro-machi Station, the Former Bank of Japan Hiroshima Branch is another surviving historic building in the district.
Stations and access
Fukuro-machi and Chuden-mae are consecutive stops on the Ujina Line. Fukuro-machi serves the Nakamachi and Fukuromachi blocks, while Chuden-mae is the southern option for Otemachi. Route 1 streetcars connect both stops with Hiroshima Station; routes 3 and 7 and the Loop Line also serve them.
City buses stop around Fukuro-machi, Shirakami-sha, and Chuden-mae. Hiroshima Airport limousine buses use Hiroshima Bus Center, leaving a final walk of about 10 to 12 minutes depending on the hotel.
Where it fits in a trip
Peace Memorial Park remains within walking range, while downtown restaurants and streetcar connections are close at hand. Hotel choice can come down to atmosphere: a larger full-service stay in Nakamachi or a more design-led hotel with rooftop social space in Otemachi.
For the shortest walk to the Shinkansen and the simplest airport-bus arrival, Hiroshima Station Area is easier. Hatchobori has denser shopping and nightlife, while Kamiyacho is closer to Hiroshima Bus Center and the Astram Line.
Good to know
Peace Boulevard crosses a large part of Hiroshima, but this location covers only the central hotel stretch around Nakamachi, Fukuromachi, and Otemachi.
The broad, tree-lined avenue is pleasant to walk. However, trips between the hotels, streetcar stops, dining streets, and Peace Memorial Park remain outdoors.
