Gifu Station

Overview

Gifu Station is the city's JR hub, serving travelers arriving from Nagoya and those continuing north on the Takayama Main Line. Around the Nagara Exit, one side of the Gifu Station Area brings together hotels, bus stops, shops, and taxis.

Shinkansen trains don't stop here. Long-distance travelers commonly change at Nagoya and take a conventional Tokaido Main Line train for the final leg to Gifu.

Lines and connections

The Tokaido Main Line runs east toward Nagoya and west toward Ogaki and Maibara. The Nagoya connection is especially important because it provides access to Shinkansen services and the wider JR network.

The Takayama Main Line begins its northbound route here toward Mino-Ota, Gero, and Takayama. This supports itineraries combining Gifu with hot springs or the Hida region, though travelers should check limited express and local stopping patterns before departure.

Station area

Gifu Station and Meitetsu Gifu Station are separate stations a short walk apart. The streets between them contain a convenient cluster of hotels and places to eat, while buses from the broader station area serve Gifu Park, Kawaramachi, and the Nagara River.

Daiwa Roynet Hotel Gifu is about seven minutes on foot from Gifu Station's Nagara Exit. It's closer to Meitetsu Gifu, an important distinction when choosing between JR services and direct trains to Centrair.

What's nearby

Transport and everyday services define the immediate station area more than historical sightseeing. Gifu Park and Kawaramachi are reached by bus, while the cormorant-fishing docks are farther north beside the Nagara River.

Good to know

Don't confuse Gifu Station with Gifu-Hashima, the separate Tokaido Shinkansen station. For central Gifu, changing at Nagoya to the Tokaido Main Line is often the clearest rail route. Direct trains to Centrair depart from Meitetsu Gifu instead.
