Overview
For trains from Seibu-Shinjuku or Takadanobaba, Hon-Kawagoe is the Seibu arrival point closest to the route into Kawagoe's historic center. Kawagoe Prince Hotel connects directly to the station, Seibu Hon-Kawagoe PePe adjoins it, and Crea Mall begins nearby.
The warehouse streets and Toki no Kane are farther north. You can walk through central Kawagoe or take a sightseeing bus, but the old town isn't immediately outside the ticket gates. Kawagoe Station and Kawagoeshi Station are separate rail stops, so the most convenient arrival point depends on which line you take from Tokyo.
Station background
Rail service reached this site in 1895, when the Kawagoe Railway opened between Kokubunji and a station then called Kawagoe. It received its present name in 1940. The original route forms part of the oldest railway lineage in today's Seibu network.
A west exit opened in 2016 to improve the connection with Kawagoeshi Station. This shortened the walk between the two stations from about 11 minutes to about five.
Lines and connections
Hon-Kawagoe is station SS29 and the terminus of the Seibu Shinjuku Line. Trains run toward Tokorozawa, Takadanobaba, and Seibu-Shinjuku. For many journeys from the Shinjuku side of Tokyo, it is the most direct station for Kawagoe.
The reserved-seat Koedo limited express runs directly from Seibu-Shinjuku and Takadanobaba. Service patterns vary, so check the timetable and limited-express ticket requirements before traveling.
Transfers to other railways require an outdoor walk. Use the west exit for Kawagoeshi Station on the Tobu Tojo Line, about five minutes away. Kawagoe Station, served by the Tobu Tojo, JR Kawagoe, and JR Saikyo-Kawagoe lines, is roughly ten minutes away on foot.
Station area
The immediate surroundings combine rail services, hotel access, and everyday shopping. Kawagoe Prince Hotel has direct first-floor access from the station, while PePe provides shops beside the gates. The Hon-Kawagoe tourist information center is also inside the PePe building.
Crea Mall runs south through central Kawagoe toward Kawagoe Station. For the historic side of town, head north instead. Remembering that distinction can prevent an unnecessary detour at the start of your visit.
What's nearby
The warehouse district, Toki no Kane, Kashiya Yokocho, Kitain Temple, and other major sights lie beyond the shopping blocks around the station. Walking there reveals the gradual change from modern retail streets to Kawagoe's older townscape.
If you'd rather save your legs, local buses connect the station area with the sightseeing district. The CO-EDO Loop Bus calls at Hon-Kawagoe and continues to major visitor stops, although festival traffic and holiday schedules can affect service.
Good to know
Hon-Kawagoe, Kawagoe, and Kawagoeshi are three different stations. They don't share a concourse, and every transfer between them requires a street-level walk.
Allow more than the quoted walking time if you have luggage or a timed connection. Seibu trains from the Shinjuku side arrive at Hon-Kawagoe, while most JR and Tobu journeys use one of the other two stations.
