Kawagoe

Warehouse facades and Toki no Kane make Kawagoe feel far removed from Tokyo, though Tobu trains take as little as 26 minutes from Ikebukuro.

Description

Overview

The old town begins north of Kawagoe's main railway stations. Kurazukuri warehouses, Toki no Kane, and traditional sweet shops give these streets the historic character behind the city's Little Edo nickname. Tokyo is close, but the atmosphere feels markedly different.

What the city is known for

Kurazukuri Street is the heart of a first visit. Former merchant buildings now house shops and restaurants, while Toki no Kane continues to ring four times a day above the surrounding streets. Nearby, Candy Alley carries on the city's confectionery tradition along a narrow lane lined with small shops.

Take your time here. South of the warehouse district, Taisho-Roman Street shifts the scene from imposing warehouse facades to early twentieth-century storefronts. In October, the Kawagoe Festival fills the historic center with large floats and music.

Main areas

The historic center around Kurazukuri Street and Candy Alley is the main sightseeing district. It isn't directly outside either principal station, so allow time for a bus ride or a substantial walk before exploring the old town.

Kawagoe Station Area combines JR and Tobu connections with shopping and many of the city's hotels. Hon-Kawagoe Station Area serves Seibu trains and is closer to Crea Mall, Taisho-Roman Street, and the approach to the old town. The right arrival point depends on your route from Tokyo.

Getting around and onward travel

Kawagoe Station is as little as 26 minutes from Ikebukuro on the Tobu Tojo Line, while JR trains also connect it with Shinjuku. Hon-Kawagoe Station is the Seibu terminus, with limited express journeys from Seibu Shinjuku taking as little as 44 minutes.

After arrival, local buses serve the city center and major visitor sights. Rental bicycles and taxis offer alternatives. Walking from either rail hub adds a fair distance before the main sightseeing circuit begins.

Where to stay and where to go next

A day trip from Tokyo is easy to arrange, but staying overnight leaves more time for side streets, temples, and a relaxed evening. The Kawagoe Station side favors JR and Tobu travel; the Hon-Kawagoe side favors Seibu connections and a shorter approach to the historic center.

Good to know

Kawagoe Station, Hon-Kawagoe Station, and Kawagoeshi Station are three separate stations. Check the full name before arranging a meeting or choosing your return train.
