Overview
Kumamoto Station is the main rail gateway for Kumamoto and the station most visitors use for Shinkansen arrivals. It anchors the Kumamoto Station Area, with AMU PLAZA KUMAMOTO, Higo Yokamon Market, station-side hotels, buses, taxis, and the city tram stop close by.
Lines and connections
The station is served by the Kyushu Shinkansen, JR Kagoshima Main Line, and JR Hohi Main Line. For visitors, the Shinkansen is the key long-distance route, connecting north toward Hakata and south toward Kagoshima-Chuo, while conventional lines support local and regional movement.
The city tram stop outside Kumamoto Station is a separate local connection rather than a JR platform. It matters for sightseeing because trams link the station side with Kumamoto Castle, downtown shopping and dining districts, and Suizenji Jojuen Garden.
Station area
The Shirakawa Exit side faces AMU PLAZA KUMAMOTO and the main station-building development. This is the most useful side for station shopping, dining, hotels, and airport-bus movement. THE BLOSSOM KUMAMOTO is located in the JR Kumamoto Station Building above AMU PLAZA KUMAMOTO, with its hotel entrance reached from the first-floor station-building side.
Airport access
Aso Kumamoto Airport access works by limousine bus to the station area rather than by direct airport rail. This makes the station a practical transfer point for travelers flying in or out and then continuing by rail, tram, taxi, or hotel check-in near the station.
Good to know
Kumamoto Station is convenient for arrivals and onward travel, but the castle and central downtown area are not directly beside the platforms. For sightseeing, plan to continue by tram, bus, taxi, or local rail depending on the destination and luggage situation.
