Overview
For Canal City Hakata and the western side of Hakata Old Town, Kushida Shrine Station is closer than the main rail hub at Hakata Station. The Nanakuma Line stop lies beneath Hakata Ekimae-dori in Fukuoka-Hakata, between Hakata and Tenjin-minami Station.
The shrine is a short walk away. Check your exit before heading upstairs, since Canal City's shops and the shrine's older neighborhood are on opposite sides of the street.
Station background
The station opened on March 27, 2023, as part of the Nanakuma Line extension from Tenjin-minami to Hakata. On the first basement level, the concourse features a Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival mural and displays of local crafts.
Lines and connections
Nanakuma Line trains run east to Hakata and west through Tenjin-minami toward Hashimoto. Hakata is the next stop for JR and Shinkansen connections, but allow time to walk from the subway platforms to your onward train.
For central Tenjin shopping, travel one stop west to Tenjin-minami. It's separate from Tenjin Station on the Airport Line, so check the line name when following directions back to your hotel.
Airport access
From Fukuoka Airport, take the Airport Line to Hakata and change to the Nanakuma Line for one stop. The subway serves the Domestic Terminal. International passengers need to use the free shuttle between terminals before or after the rail journey.
Station area
Exits 1 and 2 lead toward Canal City Hakata. Exit 3 serves Kushida Shrine, the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum, and Kamikawabata Shopping Arcade. Lifts connect street level with the concourse and platforms, and coin lockers are available inside the station.
What's nearby
The Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival centers on Kushida Shrine. Nearby, the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum explores local life and presents craft demonstrations, including Hakata weaving. Together, these places offer a compact introduction to Hakata's traditions before a walk along the shopping arcade.
Canal City brings shops, restaurants, and a cinema into the same outing.
Good to know
If you're arriving from the airport, Gion Station provides a direct train ride without changing at Hakata. It also serves this part of the city, though the walk to Kushida Shrine or Canal City is longer.
