What this station is useful for

Overview

For the south side of Tenjin, Tenjin-minami Station is usually the subway stop to check first. Its entrances place the Nanakuma Line close to Imaizumi, Watanabe-dori, the southern end of Tenjin Chikagai, and hotels such as KOKO HOTEL Fukuoka Tenjin in Fukuoka-Tenjin.

The distinction is important because several rail names are packed into the same downtown area. They are not interchangeable. Use Tenjin-minami for the Nanakuma Line and south Tenjin, Tenjin Station for the Airport Line, and Nishitetsu Fukuoka (Tenjin) Station for Nishitetsu trains.

Lines and connections

The Nanakuma Line runs between Hashimoto and Hakata. For many visitors using Tenjin-minami, Hakata is the key direction because it gives this side of Tenjin a direct subway link to JR and Shinkansen travel around Hakata.

The line also serves local trips toward Yakuin and Hashimoto, so the stop is not only a connection point for Hakata-bound travel.

Airport access

Tenjin-minami is not the direct subway stop for Fukuoka Airport. If the airport is your priority, Tenjin Station and the Airport Line are usually the simpler rail choice.

From south Tenjin, another option is to ride the Nanakuma Line to Hakata and change there to the Airport Line. That can make sense if your hotel is closest to Tenjin-minami or you are already on this side of the district.

Station area

The entrances are at the southern edge of Tenjin's shopping, dining, and hotel cluster. This side is often the better fit for Imaizumi or Watanabe-dori addresses and for the south end of Tenjin Chikagai, especially when the nearest entrance is on the Nanakuma Line.

With luggage, pay attention to the exit before you leave the platform. The Tenjin underground network is convenient, but choosing the wrong exit can turn a short subway ride into a longer walk through the mall or nearby street-level shopping blocks.

Good to know

Do not choose a stop by the word "Tenjin" alone. Check the line first: the Nanakuma Line, Airport Line, and Nishitetsu trains use different platforms and different approaches through the district.

If your plans are centered on Hakata, Tenjin-minami may be easier than walking north to the Airport Line side of Tenjin. If they are centered on Fukuoka Airport, start with the Airport Line unless your hotel is clearly closer to the Nanakuma Line.
