What this station is useful for

Overview

One local-train stop from Shinjuku, Okubo Station serves the western side of Tokyo-Okubo / Shin-Okubo. Hotels and neighborhood restaurants spread through Hyakunincho beyond the busiest Korea Town streets.

For Citadines North Shinjuku Tokyo, Okubo is the closer station at about three minutes away. Shin-Okubo Station is roughly five minutes east on foot and serves the Yamanote Line instead. The distinction matters: your best approach depends on the route, not the shared neighborhood name.

Station background

The station opened on May 5, 1895. JR East identifies it as JB09 on the Chuo-Sobu Line (Local).

The north and south exits are beneath the elevated tracks. The staffed north exit is more convenient for the hotel and Hyakunincho's main streets, while the south exit opens closer to quieter blocks toward central Shinjuku.

Lines and connections

Only Chuo-Sobu Line local trains stop at Okubo. Eastbound services call first at Shinjuku before continuing toward Ochanomizu, Akihabara, and Chiba. Westbound trains head toward Nakano and Mitaka.

Rapid Chuo Line trains don't stop here. Change at Shinjuku for faster services toward Tokyo Station or western Tokyo. When you need a direct Yamanote Line ride toward Shibuya, Ikebukuro, or Ueno, Shin-Okubo is the better alternative.

Airport access

Okubo has no direct airport train or airport limousine bus stop. One option for Narita Airport is the short JR ride to Shinjuku Station, followed by the Narita Express. Airport buses for Haneda and Narita also leave from the wider Shinjuku area, although their stops aren't at Okubo Station.

This isn't a door-to-door airport connection. Allow extra time for the transfer through Shinjuku, especially with luggage, and check the current departure point before relying on a bus.

Station area

The north exit opens onto Okubo-dori near shops, casual restaurants, and the street route toward Shin-Okubo. Head west for quieter Hyakunincho blocks and Citadines North Shinjuku Tokyo, or east for the denser Korea Town shopping and food streets.

Okubo is much smaller than Shinjuku. Its platform and exits are easier to understand, but it has fewer onward services, and most longer journeys require a change of train.

What's nearby

Korea Town and Islam Yokocho are closer to Shin-Okubo, but both are easily reached on foot from Okubo. International food is the neighborhood's main draw rather than conventional landmark sightseeing.

Good to know

Okubo and Shin-Okubo are separate JR stations. Okubo is JB09 on the Chuo-Sobu Line (Local), while Shin-Okubo is JY16 on the Yamanote Line. The street-level walk between them takes about five minutes, and there is no enclosed transfer passage.

Other stations elsewhere in Japan also use the Okubo name. When searching for a Tokyo route, confirm that you've selected the station in Shinjuku on the Chuo-Sobu Line.
