Description

Overview

Chitose is the Hokkaido city many travelers first encounter through New Chitose Airport, the region's main air hub. For planning a stay, the airport terminal area and New Chitose Airport Station are the clearest reference points, especially for early flights, late arrivals, and rail transfers toward Sapporo.

What the city is known for

Chitose combines major airport infrastructure with nearby nature and everyday city services. New Chitose Airport is more than a place to catch a flight: its terminals include shopping, dining, entertainment, hotels, onsen facilities, and visitor services, making it an easy stop before or after traveling.

Beyond the airport, Chitose is closely associated with Lake Shikotsu and a wider mix of outdoor areas, food stops, and local sightseeing. That gives the city two distinct roles: a convenient overnight base around the airport and a starting point for trips deeper into central Hokkaido.

Main areas

New Chitose Airport is the most convenient area for travelers who want terminal hotels, JR airport trains, airport buses, rental cars, shops, and restaurants in one place. The domestic and international terminal buildings are connected by indoor routes, and the JR station is on the terminal's B1F level.

Central Chitose and Lake Shikotsu are different stay choices. Central Chitose works better for local hotels and city services, while Lake Shikotsu is a nature and hot-spring area rather than an airport-side overnight base.

Getting around and onward travel

JR airport trains run directly between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo, with some services continuing toward Otaru. For other routes across Hokkaido, Minami-Chitose is the main transfer point for destinations such as Tomakomai, Muroran, Hakodate, Obihiro, and Kushiro.

Where to stay

Stay inside or next to New Chitose Airport when flight timing is the priority. It is the simplest choice for early departures, late arrivals, winter-weather buffers, and travelers who would rather avoid an early morning transfer from Sapporo. Choose Sapporo instead if the trip is centered on nightlife, city restaurants, or several urban days before flying out.
