Overview
JR and Tobu trains arrive south of Kawagoe's historic center, where Kawagoe Station anchors the city's modern arrival district. U_PLACE and several hotels are on the west side, while shopping streets and buses toward the sightseeing district are found to the east.
The old town is farther north. Its warehouse buildings, Toki no Kane bell tower, and Kashiya Yokocho aren't immediately outside the station gates. Taking a bus is easiest for most visitors, though walking lets you follow the commercial center toward the historic streets.
What the area is known for
This part of Kawagoe handles the practical side of a visit: arriving, leaving bags, checking in, and boarding a sightseeing bus. U_PLACE is beside the West Exit and connected to the station by a covered passage. Kawagoe Tobu Hotel is inside the complex, about two minutes from the exit.
The East Exit faces the station's busier shopping side and the route toward Crea Mall. Tourist information and bus stops for the sightseeing district are also here. The two sides serve different purposes, but both are compact enough to navigate without a complicated transfer.
