Why stay here

Overview

Niigata Station and its surrounding blocks form the city's main rail and bus interchange. The Joetsu Shinkansen, conventional JR lines, direct airport buses, local routes, shops, restaurants, and hotels are concentrated around the elevated station.

Rail and bus transfers take place within the station complex. The Bandai side faces the route toward Bandai Bridge and Furumachi, while the south side has offices, hotels, parking, and road connections.

What the area is known for

CoCoLo Niigata contains local-food shops, restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, and everyday services. The bus terminal is beneath the elevated tracks, so passengers can change between trains and buses without crossing the surrounding streets.

JR-East Hotel Mets Niigata connects to the west passage and is one minute from the station. Other hotels stand on both main sides of the railway, reducing the distance for late arrivals and early departures.

Main places

CoCoLo and the bus terminal are the main facilities in the immediate district. The Bandai Exit opens toward central Niigata. The South Exit serves the southern business district and several parking facilities.

Bandai Bridge is about 15 minutes on foot from the Bandai Exit. The bridge is on the route through Bandai, and Furumachi is across the Shinano River. These areas are part of central Niigata but are outside the first blocks around the station.

Stations and access

The Joetsu Shinkansen runs directly to Tokyo, with the fastest journeys taking about 110 minutes. The Shinetsu Main, Echigo, and Hakushin lines serve local and regional trips toward Nagaoka, Niitsu, Yoshida, Kashiwazaki, and Shibata.

Direct limousine buses connect the station with Niigata Airport in about 25 minutes. Local and sightseeing buses continue toward Bandai, Furumachi, Toki Messe, the port, and the aquarium.

Where it fits in a trip

Stay here for an early Shinkansen, an airport-bus transfer, or a short stop between regional trains. Meals, basic shopping, and accommodation are available within the station complex.

Bandai and Furumachi have more restaurants, bars, and evening streets. They remain accessible on foot or by bus, but neither is within the immediate station blocks.

Good to know

The west connecting passage leads directly to JR-East Hotel Mets Niigata. Airport buses stop at the station rather than the hotel door, so passengers complete the final short section through the concourse.

Use the Bandai side for the river, Bandai Bridge, and Furumachi. The South Exit is better for the southern business district and several parking facilities. Check the exit before leaving the concourse to avoid an unnecessary walk around the station.
