What this station is useful for

Overview

The name Namba covers several neighboring railway and subway stations in Osaka's Minami district, close to Dotonbori's restaurants and canal-side signs. They serve the busy shopping streets and hotels of Osaka-Namba, but you'll need the operator's name to find the right platforms.

Nankai Namba is above ground beside Namba City, while Kintetsu and Hanshin share the underground Osaka-Namba station. JR Namba is farther west at OCAT, the Osaka City Air Terminal bus complex. Underground passages connect the stations, though changing operators can involve a substantial walk.

Station background

Nankai's station opened in 1885. Facing Midosuji, the terracotta-clad Nankai Building dates from 1932, and its broad facade remains a recognizable landmark among the newer shopping buildings.

Lines and connections

For trips across central Osaka, the Midosuji Line runs directly north to Shinsaibashi, Umeda, and Shin-Osaka Station. Change at Shin-Osaka for the Shinkansen. In the other direction, the same subway line serves Tennoji.

The Yotsubashi Line runs north to Nishi-Umeda, while the Sennichimae Line heads east through Nippombashi Station to Tsuruhashi. All three subway lines use the name Namba, so follow signs for your line as well as the station.

For a day trip to Nara, take Kintetsu services from Osaka-Namba to Kintetsu-Nara. Hanshin Rapid Express trains from the same station continue to Kobe-Sannomiya without a change.

The Nankai and Koya lines begin at Nankai Namba. Elsewhere in the district, JR Namba has Yamatoji Line trains toward Tennoji; it isn't the departure point for Nankai's direct airport services.

Airport access

Nankai's Rapi:t and Airport Express both run directly between Namba and Kansai International Airport. Rapi:t has reserved seats and dedicated luggage space, and requires a limited-express ticket in addition to the ordinary fare. Its fastest services take 34 minutes. The Airport Express takes about 45 minutes and needs only the ordinary fare, without a reserved seat.

Airport buses depart from the second floor of OCAT for Kansai International Airport and Osaka Itami Airport. If you're staying near JR Namba rather than Nankai Namba, this may mean a shorter walk with luggage. Allow extra time for road traffic, and check the departure point carefully: OCAT is on the western side of the station area.

Station area

Namba City adjoins the Nankai station, with shops and restaurants close to the ticket gates. Namba Parks is nearby to the south, where a planted rooftop garden rises in terraces above the shopping floors.

Hotel locations vary considerably within Namba. Swissotel Nankai Osaka stands directly above the Nankai station, while Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka is beside OCAT and connected to JR Namba. From Hotel Monterey Grasmere Osaka, allow about ten minutes to walk to Nankai's north or central gates.

What's nearby

Walk north for Dotonbori's canal, oversized illuminated signs, and restaurants. Across Ebisubashi Bridge, Shinsaibashi-suji is a covered shopping street that continues north from the canal.

Hozenji Yokocho's stone-paved alleys are lined with restaurants and bars. At nearby Hozenji Temple, worshippers pour water over a moss-covered statue. Farther east, Kuromon Market has seafood stalls and places to eat; Nippombashi is the closer subway stop if the market is your main destination.

Good to know

Leave time to walk between ticket gates when changing operators. With luggage or a stroller, check the elevator route for your particular line because the nearest street exit may not be the step-free one.

For a meeting point, agree on an operator and named ticket gate, not simply Namba Station. Nankai's north gate is on the third floor, while its central gate is on the second.
