Overview
Fukui's compact center surrounds its main station. Direct Hokuriku Shinkansen trains from Tokyo arrive at Fukui Station, close to the main hotel district, Fukui Castle ruins, and Yokokan Garden.
Eiheiji, the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, and Ichijodani require onward travel by bus, local train, or a combination of the two. Check the route before setting out.
What the city is known for
About five minutes from the station, Fukui Castle's surviving stone walls and moat provide the center's main historical landmark. Nearby Yokokan Garden has a restored feudal villa arranged around a koi pond. The center itself is easy to cover.
Fukui Prefecture is known for dinosaurs, Zen Buddhism, traditional crafts, seafood, and produce from its mountain areas.
Main areas
The Fukui Station Area includes Shinkansen and regional trains, airport buses, hotels, food halls, and visitor information. Dinosaur Plaza is outside the West Exit, while Courtyard by Marriott Fukui is two minutes away in FUKUMACHI BLOCK.
The castle ruins and Yokokan Garden are north of the station. The blocks west of the tracks have the main concentration of shops, restaurants, and hotels.
Getting around and onward travel
Hokuriku Shinkansen trains run directly from Fukui to Kanazawa and Tokyo. Journeys from Osaka, Kyoto, or Nagoya involve taking a limited express to Tsuruga and transferring to the Shinkansen.
Echizen Railway and local buses cover many routes around northern Fukui. Direct buses connect the station with Eiheiji, while the standard public-transport route to the Dinosaur Museum combines an Echizen Railway train to Katsuyama with an onward bus.
Direct buses from Komatsu Airport arrive at the station's East Exit in about an hour.
Where to stay and where to go next
Staying near the station simplifies Shinkansen arrivals, airport transfers, and early regional departures. Courtyard by Marriott Fukui has high-floor rooms and several restaurants two minutes from the West Exit.
Allow most of a day for Eiheiji, the Dinosaur Museum, or other sights beyond the center. Trains and buses cover the main routes, but their timetables matter much more than they do for exploring downtown on foot.
Good to know
Komatsu Airport buses use the East Exit rather than stopping at individual hotels. The main hotel district is west of the tracks, so arriving passengers need to cross to the west side.
