Overview
Fukui City's main long-distance and regional transport hub brings Hokuriku Shinkansen trains, Hapi-Line services, local railways, trams, and buses together in the Fukui Station Area.
The West Exit faces the city center and Dinosaur Plaza. Hotels and food halls are nearby. The East Exit has the stops for Komatsu Airport buses and regional coaches, along with access to Echizen Railway.
Station background
The Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Fukui in 2024, giving the city a direct rail journey from Tokyo and shortening trips within the Hokuriku region. Fukui Station now combines Shinkansen service with a local network divided among several operators.
Lines and connections
Direct Shinkansen trains link Fukui with Kanazawa, Toyama, Nagano, and Tokyo, while southbound services continue to Tsuruga. Travelers coming from Osaka, Kyoto, or Nagoya usually transfer at Tsuruga from the Thunderbird or Shirasagi limited express.
Hapi-Line trains serve regional stops between Tsuruga and the Ishikawa boundary, and some continue toward Kanazawa. JR Etsumi-Hoku Line trains run from Fukui toward Ichijodani and Echizen-Ono.
Echizen Railway uses separate platforms on the east side. Its Katsuyama Eiheiji and Mikuni Awara lines serve trips toward Eiheiji-guchi, Katsuyama, Awara Onsen, and Mikuni. On the west side, the Fukui Railway tram stop handles shorter journeys around the city and services south toward Sabae and Takefu.
Airport access
Direct Keifuku buses run between Komatsu Airport and the East Exit in about an hour. Services are timed around selected flights and operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so check the current timetable and allow for road delays.
The bus isn't hotel-door transport. If you're staying west of the tracks, you'll need to cross the station after getting off.
Station area
Dinosaur Plaza and its moving monuments mark the West Exit. CURU-F inside the station and MINIE in the nearby FUKUMACHI BLOCK provide food, drinks, and shopping. Tourist information and luggage services are available on both sides of the tracks.
Courtyard by Marriott Fukui is two minutes from the West Exit, and other hotels cluster around the station. Staying nearby keeps early departures and short overnight stops close to the platforms.
What's nearby
The remains of Fukui Castle are about five minutes away on foot, with original stone walls and part of the moat surrounding the prefectural government offices. Yokokan Garden is about ten minutes from the station, so it can be combined with the castle on a central walk.
Direct buses from the East Exit travel to Eiheiji. For the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum, the usual public transport route is Echizen Railway to Katsuyama followed by a local bus.
Good to know
Several operators use the Fukui name, but their platforms aren't all within one gate area. Check the operator before choosing an exit, because each railway and bus service uses different platforms or stops.
Komatsu Airport buses depart from the East Exit. The main hotel and commercial blocks are west of the tracks.
