Overview
Between Minato Mirai's modern towers and Yokohama's older port streets, Bashamichi Station is the Minatomirai Line stop for the Red Brick Warehouse, Kishamichi, and the Kitanaka waterfront. It provides a convenient approach to the Shinko side of Yokohama-Minatomirai without going through the district's central underground concourse.
Nearby Sakuragicho Station serves a different role. Use Sakuragicho for JR and the Blue Line; use Bashamichi for Minatomirai Line trains toward Yokohama, Shibuya, Nihon-odori, and Motomachi-Chukagai. The difference matters with luggage.
Station background
Bashamichi opened with the Minatomirai Line in 2004. Its design reflects the meeting of a redeveloped waterfront and a historic district: hand-laid brick walls and pieces from older local buildings share the concourse with modern metal, glass, and a central domed space.
The name comes from Bashamichi, the broad road where horse-drawn traffic became a familiar sight after the street opened in the 1860s. Japan's first gas streetlights were also lit in the area in 1872, and that history remains visible in the neighborhood above the station.
Lines and connections
Bashamichi is MM04 on the Minatomirai Line, between Minatomirai Station and Nihon-odori Station. Eastbound trains continue to Motomachi-Chukagai for Chinatown and Yamashita Park, while westbound services run through Yokohama Station onto the Tokyu Toyoko Line.
Many trains continue beyond Yokohama toward Shibuya, Shinjuku-sanchome, Ikebukuro, and other destinations on connected lines. Destinations vary by service, so check the train display if you're traveling beyond Yokohama.
Airport access
There is no direct airport train from Bashamichi. For Haneda Airport, travel to Yokohama and change to Keikyu. For Narita Airport, Yokohama Station provides connections to the Narita Express and airport buses, with the Minatomirai Line covering the local leg.
Station area
The station lies below the Kitanaka and Bashamichi side of the waterfront. Yokohama-Shiyakusho is used as an alternate station name for the nearby city hall. Exits lead toward historic Bashamichi, the Shinko waterfront, and the cluster of offices and hotels between Bashamichi and Sakuragicho.
Yokohama Sakuragicho Washington Hotel is about three minutes away on foot. JR Sakuragicho is closer to the hotel, but Bashamichi gives guests a second route to Minatomirai Line destinations without changing trains at Yokohama.
What's nearby
The Red Brick Warehouse is about six minutes away, with shops, restaurants, exhibitions, and seasonal events inside its converted port buildings. Kishamichi crosses the water along an old freight-line alignment and leads toward World Porters, Cosmo World, and the wider Shinko sightseeing area.
Historic Bashamichi runs inland from the station toward Kannai. Its older commercial buildings and gaslight references create a different atmosphere from the towers and attractions around the bay.
Good to know
Bashamichi and Sakuragicho are close enough to serve some of the same hotels, but they aren't interchangeable. Check whether your route requires the Minatomirai Line, JR, or the Blue Line before choosing an entrance or walking across the district.
For the central Minato Mirai complex around Queen's Square and Pacifico Yokohama, Minatomirai Station is usually closer. Bashamichi is better for the Red Brick Warehouse, Kishamichi, Kitanaka, and the historic streets west of Nihon Odori.
